South Florida couple Brett Sugerman and Giselle Loor Sugerman believe that "interior design should be both functional and innovative." This design philosophy brought them together in 2006 to found b+g design. With almost 40 years of combined industry experience, these lifestyle innovators have found their niche in high-end residential and executive-class commercial projects.

Not being a Miami local can hurt when trying to make your way through the city during large events such as Art Basel. Luckily, the Sugermans are locals and love to share their top tips to navigating Miami like a pro. For first time Basel attendees, their expertise is invaluable! Check out their guide below to navigate Miami #LikeALocal.

STAY

Mondrian South Beach is a place to “see and be seen.” Whimsical and visionary, the hotel’s lobby features an iconic floating staircase that immediately catches the eye. The Mondrian offers guests a multitude of amenities, including the signature South Beach Spa, GUYandGIRL, as well as their restaurant Mondrian Caffe. The Mondrian is just minutes from the center of South Beach, meaning that guests are close to all of the exciting hustle and bustle of Basel!

From the eclectic details to the larger, more elegant spaces, the Delano is best described as “simplicity with a crisp, clean, and modern sense of ease.” With three restaurants to choose from (Bianca, Umi Sushi and Sake Bar, and Rose Bar), your options are endless. We suggest a day by the pool after a night out at the Delano’s FDR lounge!

Each room at the 1 Hotel is designed with nature in mind- from the hemp-blend Keetsa mattresses to the triple-filtered water. Additionally, the restaurant features farm-fresh, locally grown ingredients. We recommend rejuvenating at the Bamford Haybarn Spa after a busy day at Basel!

SEE + DO

The Wynwood Walls were conceived by renowned community revitalizer and placemaker Tony Goldman in 2009. The goal? To create a center where people could explore, and to develop the area’s pedestrian potential. The Walls became a major statement with Tony’s commitment to graffiti and street art, which he believed was under appreciated and not historically respected. Since it’s inception, the Walls have become a must see destination!

Alex Yanes “builds something out of nothing,” elevating everyday items to art and giving them a whole new life. His art comes alive via wood, acrylic, resin, and enamel in three-dimensional installations. Each piece is a unique view into his history and love affair with art, catching the eye of collectors and new art enthusiasts alike. Yanes’ work is now a staple in Wynwood’s art district, and the Ligné Atelier is proud to host him during Art Basel.

Fredric Snitzer Gallery - The Fredric Snitzer Gallery has been frequently mentioned among the nation’s best since its inception in the ‘70s. It has become a prestigious locale on Miami’s art landscape, and owner Snitzer even sits on the Art Basel selection committee!

Giovanni Rossi Fine Art - Giovanni specializes in finding that “final touch” for his clients’ projects. He strives to bring the most talented, cutting edge artists from the world to South Florida.

The Miami Design District is dedicated to innovative fashion, design, architecture, and dining experiences. The District presents the best of the best in shopping, cultural, and culinary experiences while encouraging a neighborhood full of creative experiences. This is a great place to stop and take a shopping break, as all of the hot fashion designers are there!

Scope, Red Dot, and Pulse are three exhibitions featuring new emerging artists. Understanding which exhibition is, is effective in terms of managing your time so that you are able to see all that Basel has to offer.

The Perez Museum is a must see. The exhibitions highlight a range of art, and the museum offers even more! In addition to the exhibitions, there is waterfront dining at Verde and gorgeous views of Biscayne Bay and hanging gardens.

EAT + DRINK

Alter, located in the Wynwood district, focuses on locally sourced ingredients, and their beverages include include a wine selection spanning from well known producers to small artisanal growers. This is one of our favorite restaurants!

Gigi offers Asian-infused comfort food and desserts. They serve brunch, lunch, and late night eats on a first come, first serve basis. This is a great spot for a quick lunch!

In the heart of the Wynwood district, Wynwood Kitchen & Bar features an interesting blend of art and innovative Latin-influenced cuisine. The bar area features a large mural by famed graffiti artist Shepard Fairey, while including 20 foot abstract paintings from Christian Awe and a large sculptural man by David Benjamin Sherry. Whether dining indoors or out, Wynwood Kitchen & Bar satiates diners’ visual and physical appetites.

One of the best kept secrets in Miami is part of the Freehand Miami hotel. The Broken Shaker, a James Beard Award semi-finalist cocktail bar, is a more low key and intimate space where handcrafted cocktails are their specialty. This is one you cannot miss!

  • Download the Art Basel app to keep you updated with essential show information, news and updates, a helpful map, and listings for every show/exhibit!

  • Uber, don’t drive! The crowds and parking are insane, especially during the weekends.
