Heavy and Light by Sofia Echa

Painting with acrylic and oil on both canvas and metal, Sofia Echa combines different mediums and bases to express her “language” and explore biomorphic shapes. Working with metal, she plays with the illusion of being ‘light’ and heavy at the same time: heavy aluminum sheets have a shadow on the wall so the work seems to be ‘floating’. Her inspiration of nature and sensuality are deliberately woven into her work and cemented as an integral part of her spirited paintings. The mix of strength and gentleness, delicacy and power, presented so clearly in her spirited paintings, capture fundamental truth about beauty, contract of emotions and experiences that are difficult to put into words.
Sofia Echa was born in 1992 in Vladivostok, Russia and settled in New York City in 2013 to continue her pursuit of a career in art after she received a bachelor degree in Economics and Japanese studies at Federal University of Vladivostok, Russia. Before that Sofia studied fine arts in Art School of Vladivostok and in Cambridge School Of Visual & Performing Arts, Cambridge, UK. Her works are in private collections in the United States and Russia. She is honored to have donated work to the 2015 National Academy Gala auction honoring National Academician, Eric Fischl, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Sofia is getting ready for her solo exhibition in Sol’ Center of Contemporary Art in Vladivostok, Russia this September.
